Friday 20th January was the launch of Lathom’s newest club – Girls Active. The club will take place every Friday lunchtime and is ran by our Year 9 leaders. The main objective of Girls Active is tohelp motivate as many teenage girls to want to take part in PE and sport. The project aims to give girls the confidence to get involved in an extra-curricular activity that in the past they may not have had. At the same time it also allows some of our older students to become role models within the school as they take full responsibility and ownership of the club.
The Year 9 girls have been involved in the full process of setting up the club they began by doing some market research on what our Year 7 & 8 girls would enjoy doing at the club. Once this was done they got to work producing posters ready for the big launch on Friday 20th January. Prior to the start date the girls promoted the Girls Active club to the younger girls in an assembly and we were blown away by the response.
We were delighted when we had 25 girls attending our very first Girls Active session. One girl said “ I love the atmosphere the Year 9 leaders have created, it feels really friendly” (Naomi Holmes – Year 7 student) another student reported “This is so much fun, I can’t wait for next week” (Erin Watkinson – Year 7 student).
