Lathom High School: Excellent results building for the future

Staff and students at Lathom High school should be extremely proud of their GCSE achievements once again. Following their successes, students are able to build for the future with the results they need for the next stage of their career. This comes at a time when the school itself is preparing for the future with a very significant building programme now fully underway.

Performance in the core subjects of English and Maths was excellent with 64% of students achieving passes at Grade 4 or better in English and 61% achieving this grade in maths. A fantastic 100% of students achieved A*C in Religious Education and Computing. Contributing further to this year’s excellent success were A*C results of 94% in Further Additional Science, 82% in Physical Education, 75% in Resistant Materials and 71% in ICT. A number of subjects performed extremely well in terms of A*A attainment with 33% of students achieving the top grades in Religious Education, 24% in Further Additional Science and 21% in History.

Lathom students followed the school’s trend of excellent attainment at the top end of the ability range with several students flying high. Adam Preston achieved 3 Grade 9s in the new English and Maths GCSEs and A* in all other subjects studied. This achievement was mirrored by Katie Plant who also achieved 3 Grade 9s in English and Maths and A*A in all other subjects studied. In the new GCSE examinations, Summer Jameson achieved Grade 9 in English Language, Eleanor Kenyon Grade 9 in English Literature and Caitlin Webster in Year 10 achieved Grade 9 in English Literature. Mrs Galbraith explained the high academic expectation of these new GCSE qualifications and was delighted to report that students had ‘certainly risen to the challenge!

Paul Cotterill, Chair of Governors, would like to congratulate all the students and staff on their successes and wish our students well in their further studies. Reflecting on the national picture, he commented ‘only 2,000 extremely able candidates got a 9 in all three new exams and two of those are at our school – I’d say that is brilliant!’
