Reading programme

At Lathom High School we follow 2 different reading programmes:

Accelerated Reader

We use Accelerated Reader at Lathom High School, a program that helps teachers manage and monitor student’s independent reading practice.

Using Accelerated Reader (AR) is easy and simple for students. With thousands of books available, students read a book then take an online quiz on the Accelerated Reader website and receive immediate feedback on their results.

Accelerated Reader allows us to monitor students’ reading practice, provide intervention to students and challenge students to read more complex texts.

All students in Year 7 and 8 have AR as part of their curriculum with their English teacher. All students in Year 7 and 8 complete a Star Reader Assessment which allows us to assess comprehension and reading levels of each student. Students can build their word count every time they successfully complete a quiz and be in with a chance to win prizes throughout the school year.

Accelerated Reader can be accessed via our individual school link https://ukhosted66.renlearn.co.uk/1895310 and each student is provided with their own account.

Bedrock

At Lathom High School, we use a learning program called Bedrock Learning, a website that helps children to learn important academic vocabulary, whilst also encouraging them to read regularly.

Students complete a baseline vocabulary assessment which will identify which level they are working at. As students progress through the curriculum, they will read fiction and non-fiction texts regularly.

All students in Year 7, 8 and 9 will have Bedrock lessons in school and should be completing 20 points a week as homework to ensure the consistent exposure required for vocabulary learning. Students can collect points and be entered into competitions to win prizes!

Bedrock can be accessed via the link https://app.bedrocklearning.org/ and students can log in with their own details or through Office365 using their school email address.
