Wigan Athletic Community Trust has been working with Lathom High School to run alternative education programmes around business and enterprise since 2014. Lathom High School is 20 minutes from the Community Trust’s offices at Montrose Skills Hub, the school was highlighted in the 2018 Impact Report, which demonstrated how the charity have worked with more than 12,000 people over the past year to improve health, enhance life chances and create stronger, safer communities.

Head Teacher Jane Galbraith is a passionate supporter of the work of the Community Trust and a strong believer in its impact.

“Working with Wigan Athletic Community Trust has been a revelation for our school and the opportunities the children have had to work with a professional football club have been incredible.

“They’ve had the chance to meet people from all different walks of life while also gaining an insight into the different job roles available in the football should they wish to pursue a career in the industry.

“Developing their business and enterprise skills has been immense for them in a place where they wouldn’t usually get the opportunity to do so. Most of them are all big Latics fans so for them to be able to say they’re working with their favourite football club is just amazing.

“They’ve developed their confidence, gained an interest in a subject and raised their aspirations while working with the Community Trust, factors that will enhance their life skills and life chances which will ultimately make them better adults in the future.”

Among the programmes the Community Trust works with Lathom’s students on is the Premier League Enterprise Challenge – a national competition supported by both the Premier League and Sport Relief – that involves students from across the country responding to a real business challenge set by Premier League Executive Chairman Richard Scudamore.

The Challenge is targeted at young people who may be low on confidence, struggling with their behaviour or who just need some extra support.

“Lily and Charlotte have been unrecognisable from the two little girls who stood up and shook the very first time they took part in the Enterprise Challenge at the DW Stadium.

“They now stand out from the crowd and make our school and the Community Trust very proud. They’ll be highly successful adults and will secure good employment because of the challenge.”

For the last two years Lathom High School have been named the Wigan winners of the competition and selected to represent Latics at the regional competition. In 2018, they went one better and were named joint overall winners of the competition at the national finals in London.

The challenge has been a life-changing experience for 14-year-old Dan Stephens, who in the summer of 2017 underwent surgery following a bleed to his brain. This left Dan low on confidence, becoming more socially isolated, so the school considered him to be an ideal candidate to take part.

A huge Latics fan, the challenge has seen Dan receive mentoring support from the Community Trust, which has helped him to rediscover his zest for school, his friends and his life.

His Mum Joanne said: “I have no doubt the programme has helped to change my son’s life because he has returned to his old self. It has helped to energise, focus and provide him a platform to redevelop his confidence and belief in himself. I will always be thankful for this opportunity as it has given me my son back.”
